Our externships are customizable programs of 2 weeks that are open to 3rd and 4th-year students. Work side-by-side with our team and get great practical experience. Focus on the things you want to focus on, and learn about your career possibilities with CityVet.

We have multiple location options in Texas and Colorado and offer a stipend for out-of-state students and in-state students. 

This program is designed to allow you to develop your practice skills, and gain confidence by receiving a few weeks of mentorship before taking on a full schedule, with one of our experienced DVM available for support.

At CityVet, we believe mentorship is a key component to your success in veterinary medicine. This specific type of learning involves the transfer of both skills and knowledge along with the guidance that is provided within the context of a one-on-one relationship.

The four stages correspond to the four quarters of your first year at CityVet and include onboarding, orientation, goal setting, training, and review.

Q1

Initial Orientation and Onboarding

  • Personal profile review (Culture Index) to better understand your learning & stress management style and to place you with the most compatible team
  • Systems training for practice management software (ezyVet), production and scheduling tools (MUTTS), and payroll (Exponent HR)
  • Organizational values and new team member roundtable meetings to foster collaboration with other team members across different locations and key organizational leaders
  • Your initial appointment schedule will start with 60-minute appointment slots with a focus on wellness visits, routine medical caseload to allow you the time you need with frequent check-ins with mentor DVM

Q2

Establish Personal and Professional Development Goals

  • Complete your initial clinical skills inventory and review with DVM mentor to determine gaps and areas of interest for development/improvement
  • Complete “Crucial Conversations” training to expand your development in conflict management and effective communication skills
  • Complete personal finance consultation (optional) and set your goals (managing debt, student loans, insurance, and investment)
  • Continue roundtable meetings for Q&A and collaboration with other team members
  • Adjust appointment schedule to 45 minutes, assess caseload and procedures progress

Q3

Establish Practice Rhythm and Gauge Progress

  • Complete “Getting Things Done” training to hone your time management skills
  • Records audits/review and training for best practices in maintaining quality medical records
  • Video assessment for exam room excellence (see yourself in action and have seasoned practitioners provide tips and training for continued improvement in client interaction)
  • Adjust appointment times to 30 minutes (or as appropriate)

Q4

Transition
and Review

  • Review of clinical skills inventory and development goals
  • Review CityVet CE calendar of events and personal CE plan for the coming year
  • Outline any areas of interest for future development (personal and professional)
  • Prepare for annual review (HR, production, and clinical metrics)
